Distant Early Warning (DEW) line was a system of radar stations set up on the 70th parallel on the far Canadian Arctic region of North America. The line of sophisticated radar was intended as a “trip wire” in the event of a Soviet attack during MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) decades of the Cold War.
Fortunately, we escaped from those precarious years without the third use of nuclear weapons. The US once had 40,000 targets in the former USSR as I learned while living in militarized Honolulu. There were only 200 Soviet cities with more than one million people. US intentions were obviously to annihilate a huge nation with eleven time zones. Mainland USA has Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific.
The “communist menace” seems to have passed and now “terrorism” keeps us spending over $1 billion daily on “defense.”
The Pentagon in 2004 alerted President Bush that global warming is a greater threat than terrorism.
The Flat Earth Society still survives and there are some who still fear a communist takeover. A core of profit oriented climate change “contrarians” look fearfully upon General Honore’, the Green Army, Sierra Club, League of Women Voters, and those who speak out for preserving the Earth’s environment.
Members of the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) could be among the “threats” to our fossil fuel economy because they too warn about climate change. UCS spokespersons disclosed from 1991 to 2010 there were 13,950 peer reviewed papers on climate change. Only twenty-four denied climate change was a reality.
NASA scientist James Hanson, Bill McKibben (founder of 350.org) and other researchers believe 350 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide is a relatively safe level. In May 2013 it was discovered on Mauna Loa in Hawaii, we went beyond 400ppm for the first time in human history. Such amounts of carbon dioxide are not good for children growing up now.
Hansen, McKibben, and thousands throughout 44 states expressed opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline on February 3rd.
Opponents of KXL are simply declaring tar sands oil will be a greater threat to our future by pushing carbon dioxide emissions much higher than 350 ppm. First American natives in Alberta want the drilling/desecration to stop.
Canada ignores Native Americans’ opposition to KXL.
Could we begin to look upon that controversial KXL pipeline as Earth’s Dangerous Early Warning line about climate?
President Obama and the State Department may perceive climate change will spare no living beings if it goes unchecked.
Do melting polar regions release tons of moisture into the atmosphere that must eventually come back in the form of country-paralyzing snow?
