Mordechai Vanunu was a technician with the nuclear weapons program already existing in Israel during the 1980’s. Vanunu was en route to be interviewed by a reporter from THE LONDON TIMES when Mossad agents of Israel’s intelligence agency then snatched him in a London “honey trap”, whisked him off to Tel Aviv, found him guilty and sentenced Vanunu to twenty-five years in Ashkelon Prison,. During his incarceration we exchanged letters. To my great surprise I simply addressed my letter of sympathy to Mordechai Vanunu, Ashkelon Prison, Ashkelon, Israel, and the rigid censors cooperated. Israel has since relented to global pressure and released Vanunu from prison. He is not able to leave Israel, nor speak to any reporters.
Veteran journalist Helen Thomas sat in the front row of a presidential press conference in 2013. Her question was very simple: “Mr. President, can you please name one country in the Persian Gulf that already has nuclear weapons?” Obama had an opportunity to be honest by saying – (Of course Helen, it is Israel). Instead the Commander-in-Chief wriggled out of an opportunity for sincerity by saying, “Now Helen, we cannot speculate…” All US elected officials live in fear of the Israeli lobby embodied in AIPAC.
THE TIMES OF ISRAEL (September 6th) allowed Vanunu to be interviewed by TI journalists and address the existing threat already in the clandestine Israeli Dimona nuclear facility. Will such a “treasure trove” of nuclear information be revealed while GOP elected officials and FOX NEWS commentators rail against a diplomatic nuclear arrangement with Iran? We overthrew their government in the 1950’s.
There are now forty-five US military bases already surrounding Iran with the Fifth fleet of the US Navy in the Persian Gulf. Two aircraft carriers bearing the names of Roosevelt and Truman await the call for action in this tense time. Attach history to those two presidents for global images of fear.
Several aspiring candidates for winning the 2016 Oval Office bemoan the “weakness” of US military forces even though we have thousands of nuclear warheads at the ready. Designers of Project For A New American Century (PNAC) (Dick Chaney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, supported by several members of the Bush family) salivate over future US “victories” in a world where our foreign policies seem to sputter. Humiliating overthrow of Guatemala’s president in September is the bitter fruit of the 1954 CIA – engineered coup in an impoverished nation where suffering and violence followed US illegal interference.
While living in Dallas (1989) I quietly met a Guatemalan student who was hiding from his own government secret agents. In his high school class of forty-eight, only he and one classmate, also in hiding, survived the determination of oligarchs in Guatemala to eliminate the indigenous people of their suffering nation.
Vanunu is alive, bold, still warning us who and where the nuclear threat is today. Opposition to diplomacy in Iran now is far more deadly than our blunder in Guatemala. Please visit – Diplomacy not war with Iran
